Selfless Part 3: Extravagant In Generosity

Selfless Part 3: Extravagant In Generosity

Philippians 2:2-4 (MGS) Be deep-spirited friends . . . . Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead . . . . Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

EXTRAVAGANT IN GENEROSITY

Psalm 37:21 (NLT) The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers.

. . . the godly show compassion and are generous. – NET

  • Compassion is the reason the godly are generous.
  • Compassion is the byproduct of genuinely caring for others.

Romans 12:6-8 (NIV) We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Dave Ramsey says, “Typically, one spouse is a nerd and the other is a free spirit.” Giving comes easier to some.

Rules for the Free Spirit

  • Make sure your family’s needs are covered first.

1 Timothy 5:8 (NKJV) But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

  • Be more spirit-led in your giving.

Romans 8:14 (NIV) For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

Appreciate your spouse’s spiritual gifts. God placed your spouse in your life to bring balance to your gift. God placed you in your spouses life so they have a life.

Proverbs 11:25 (NIV) A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

THREE MINDSETS ABOUT GENEROSITY

1) THE BAG MINDSET: There is never enough.

Haggai 1:6 (NKJV) . . . You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.

Most Americans live this way—There is not enough in the bag. This was Judas’s mindset. He was all about the bag! In Mark 14 a woman with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume gave Jesus an extravagant gift. Judas says, “She is wasting it.” The bag mindset overvalues money. Judas betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver to get more money in the bag.

2) THE BASKET MINDSET: There is enough.

This is the budgeter! You have a plan. You are saving every month.

Ecclesiastes 5:13 (NLT) There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.

The basket mindset hoards money to their own detriment and to the detriment of others.

3) THE BARN MINDSET: There is way more than enough.

Proverbs 3:6-10 (TLB) In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Don’t be conceited, sure of your own wisdom. Instead . . . Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income, and he will fill your barns with wheat and barley and overflow them.

The barn mindset values God over money. It puts God first, it genuinely cares about others, it doesn’t hold back. Why do we give? Because God gave first. He gave us Jesus.
