Ecclesiastes 1:9 (AMP) The thing that has been, it is what will be again, and that which has been done is that which will be done again; and there is nothing new under the sun.
Solomon wrote this from a place of discouragement as he pondered the futility of human effort – of living one’s life – without God. His conclusion, after considering the totality of man’s accomplishments and efforts, was: All is vanity (emptiness, futility, falsity). This is a phrase which he used throughout the book of Ecclesiastes.
On the flip side, the fact that there is nothing new under the sun can be encouraging when you are looking at “modern day problems” and how they might affect your life. Things like: climate change, plastic in the food and water supply, new strains of viruses, etc, etc. Whatever the current concern that the media is promoting, you can know:
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful.
Whatever trial tries to come on you, God is faithful to deliver you from it. Amen! Satan presents his threats as something never seen before (to try to generate fear of the unknown), but when you recognize that it’s just the same old, same old, you won’t fall for his lies.
There truly is nothing new under the sun! The fact is, each generation faces the same problems, although Satan tries to wrap up the package in a different kind of paper or put a different bow on it. But however it is presented; God remains the answer to every problem, trial, or temptation. He always has everything under control, when you trust that He does. So, cast your burdens (concerns, fears, problems, temptations, worries – whatever is weighing you down) on the Lord and allow Him to uplift you and sustain you. (Psalms 55:22)
Matthew 6:27 (AMP) For which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature, or by being anxious can add to the span of his life?
Here’s another statement that is “nothing new” – Worry has never solved any problem! That’s because worry is nothing but faith in the wrong direction. So start focusing on the promises of God’s Word, not on what might happen “if”. . . . The good news is you can turn your thoughts around (to trusting God and believing in His faithfulness) and begin looking forward to a positive outcome instead of a negative one.
On March 1, Pastor David began a new series titled Real Christianity. A statement he’s made several times is “Be a real Christian, because fake is exhausting.” So true! Real Christianity is experiencing God, but religion (“the fake”) tends to get in the way of this. All that you desire to experience in your Christian walk will only be fulfilled in a satisfying connection – a real relationship – with God. Connecting with God is a heart issue; it is not based on external actions.
Moses ordained 613 laws to try to get the Israelites to obey God’s Ten Commandments! Jesus boiled it down to just one:
Mark 12:30 (NIRV) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind and with all your strength.
All God really wants from you is for you to fall in love with Him a little more each day. When you do this, you will effortlessly walk in love . . . and in joy, peace, goodness, faith, etc. Just be determined to fall more in love with God and watch Him begin to speak to you, work in you, and truly change your life. Jesus said:
Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG) Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.
Religion is the opposite of the unforced rhythms of God’s grace. Religion tells you that you have to do things in order to get God to love you and bless you. Religion has its roots in the fall of Adam. When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit they (and all people after them) became flesh dominated instead of spirit-led. Being ruled by your flesh will enslave you, but being ruled by The Holy Spirit will set you free! The good news is you can allow The Spirit to have His way. It’s your choice. Begin to believe and speak over yourself: I am a child of God. I am led by His Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:14 (ERV) The true children of God are those who let God’s Spirit lead them.
The Spirit will show you the way to connect with God by:
- Seeking Him = God, I want Your way
- Humbling yourself = God, I want Your will and
- Engaging your heart = God, I want Your work.
