My Best Friend Part 1

My Best Friend Part 1

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Acts 19:1-2 (NIV) While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

I want you to know the truth about the Holy Spirit, without the extremes.

  • He is a person. He is not an it. He is not a ghost.

John 16:13-14 (Last Days Bible) But when the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into the full truth. He will not speak His own message, but will give you the message that has been given to Him for you . . . . He will glorify Me, because He will take the things that belong to Me and tell you about them.

  • He is not weird. People can be weird, but God is not.

Luke 11:11-13 (NIV) Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask!

  • He is God. So those who say, “Stay away from that Holy Spirit.” Are actually saying, “Stay away from God.”

Acts 5:3-4 (NIV) Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit? . . . You have not lied to men but to God.”

  • He is my best friend.

John 15:26 (NIRV) I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend comes to help you, he will be a witness about me.

The Bible calls the Holy Spirit our helper, comforter, counselor, guide, teacher, intercessor, encourager and friend.

A Breath of Fresh Air

  • Ruach – a wind, breath of air, energy of life, spirit.
  • Pneuma – a gentle breeze, a breath of life, a life-giving spirit.

Romans 8:6 (AMP) Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].

  • Wind is unseen.

John 14:16-17 (NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in You.

  • Wind is powerful. There are some things that human power cannot fix.

Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

  • Wind is refreshing.

Psalm 23 (NIV) The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

My Best Friend

2 Corinthians 13:14 (Message) The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.

  • God the Father loves me. He’s my dad.
  • God the Son saves me. He’s my brother.
  • God the Holy Spirit does life with me. He’s my friend.
