Cross to the Throne Part 2: Spirit, Soul, and Body
The Apostle Paul’s revelation starts with an understanding of spirit, soul, and body.
2 Corinthians 5:16-17 (St. Paul from the Trenches) I no longer, then, regard man as physical, but spiritual. The physical is no longer set before my eyes. Christ himself to me is no more a physical being; I see him spiritually, and in that spiritual vision I learn that man is a new creation.
. . . if anyone is in Christ Jesus (and they are), he is a new (spiritual) species. The old things (position in Adam, spiritual death) have lost their power; behold, new things have come. – RICKARD
The first revelation in Paul’s system of truth is that man is NOT a physical being. Man is a spiritual being, who finds expression through a soul, and who lives in a body. Our body is simply an earth suit—the spirit man is the real you.
2 Corinthians 5:6, 8 (KJV) Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord . . . . We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Why is this important? Because the spiritual realm created the natural realm. Therefore, it is the spiritual realm that holds the power to shape life on earth.
Ephesians 6:12 (JOHN) Our real struggle is not with persons, but with those invisible [spiritual] forces which shape life on earth.
As spirit beings, united to God, we have the power to change natural circumstances of life. Therefore, the revelation of spirit, soul, and body opens up the door to supernatural living.
Redemption centers around spiritual life and spiritual death. Spiritual life is union with God. Spiritual death is separation from God. This is man’s true problem.
Romans 5:12 (CP) Through one man [Adam] sin got a toehold in the world. Then through sin death [thanatos] got in and that’s how death [thanatos] infected the whole human race and why everybody sinned.
At the Fall of man spiritual death infected man’s entire being:
- Spirit: Separated from God. A spiritual void created.
- Soul: Understanding darkened. Identity questioned.
- Body: Became mortal and subject to sickness, disease and death.
One man got us in a mess. But, it only takes one man to get us out—Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:19 (MALTBY) The human race has known the inheritance of death [through Adam]: it is now to know the inheritance of life [through Christ].
Because death infected man’s spirit, soul, and body Jesus’s redemptive work had to extend to man’s entire being.
1 John 3:8 (AMP) The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].
John 14:6 (NASB) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
Jesus said, “I am the way out of the effects of Adam’s transgression and into spiritual life.” In redemption Jesus was undoing everything satan had done. Therefore, when we accept Jesus’s victories in our spirit, soul, and body we experience God’s great reversal!
