Foundations of Faith Part 4: The Laying on of Hands

Hebrews 6:1-2 (TPT) Now is the time for us to progress beyond the basic message of Christ and advance into perfection. The foundation has already been laid for us to build upon: [1] turning away from our dead works to [2] embrace faith in God, [3] teaching about different baptisms, [4] impartation by the laying on of hands, [5] resurrection of the dead, and [6] eternal judgment.

Last week you learned that you are Christ’s Body. You now have a new position, new authority, and a place to belong.

1 Corinthians 12:12, 18, 27 (JOHN) The body is a unit that has many parts or organs, all of which form a common body. This illustrates the functioning of the Body of Christ . . . . God has created the various parts of the body and made them complementary as it pleased him . . . . You all are the Body of Christ and each of you is a special part. God has placed different parts in this Body called the Church and has given them their function.

God has something special He wants you to do.

Ephesians 4:11-12 (LOVETT) Some God gave as apostles, others as prophets; some as traveling missionaries or evangelists, while others serve as pastors with the ability to guide and teach the people. All of them are charged with the task of equipping every believer for his personal ministry.

Every believer has a personal ministry. Where do you belong?

The Laying on of Hands is used to:

  • Empower you for ministry
  • Transmit God’s anointing and power
EMPOWER YOU FOR MINISTRY

Numbers 27:18-20 (NIV) The Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.

Laying on of hands is used to recognize a gift and release it.

Acts 6:3-6 (NIV) Choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them [distribution of food] . . . .They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip . . . .They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

God wants leadership to recognize your gift, and then release it at the proper time. God doesn’t want your gift to take you where your character can’t keep you.

TRANSMIT GOD’S ANOINTING AND POWER

Acts 19:11 (AMP) God did unusual and extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul.

Did you know God wants to use you to do extraordinary things?

Mark 16:15-20 (VERNON) Go out from this land into the whole wide world. Preach the good news of My Gospel to everyone. Those who believe and are baptized into the new life will be secure and free; but those who refuse to believe will suffer . . . You will know those who believe by the signs that go with them. By my power they will drive out evil things; they will speak foreign tongues; snakes and serpents will not harm them; poison will not hurt them; and when they put their hands on those who are ill, they will bring health and healing.

Luke 4:18-19 (VOICE) The Spirit of the Lord the Eternal One is on Me. Why? Because the Eternal designated Me to be His representative to the poor [afflicted], to preach good news to them. He sent Me to tell those who are held captive that they can now be set free, and to tell the blind that they can now see. He sent Me to liberate those held down by oppression. In short, the Spirit is upon Me to proclaim that now is the time; this is the jubilee season of the Eternal One’s grace.

People need God’s anointing and power in their lives.

Isaiah 10:27 (KJV) It shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

One way we release God’s anointing [to heal, to deliver, to set free, to restore] is through the laying on of hands.

  • Discover your ministry.
  • Develop Christ’s character.
  • Destroy Satan’s kingdom.

Matthew 10:7-8 (TLB) Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure the lepers, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
