Life Money Hope Part 2

1 Timothy 6:9-10 (NIV) People who want to get rich [who have the wrong perspective of money] fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Luke 12:34 (NIV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Numbers Only

  • Earning.
  • Spending. 70% of Americans don’t have a budget.
  • Saving. The average American spends 136% of their income.
  • Investing. Money works for you instead of working for it.
  • Giving.

Living Beyond Numbers

1 Corinthians 1:20 (NIV) Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 


  1. Calling vs. compensation. How much money you make will not fulfill you. What will is finding your purpose.
  • We don’t just need money to live on.
  • We need something to live for.

Acts 20:24 (NIV) I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.


  1. Contentment vs. consumerism. Jesus taught that our life does not consist in the abundance of our possessions, but in the quality of our relationships.

Luke 12:15 (TLB) Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are.

Philippians 4:12 (NIV) I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

What is the secret? Realizing you are blessed. Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want but the realization of what you already have.


  1. God dependent vs. independent.

Proverbs 18:11 (NIV) The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.

I will not trust in riches but in Him who richly provides.


  1. Stewardship vs. ownership. God owns everything. I am a manager.

Matthew 6:19-20 (NIV) Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.


  1. Generosity vs. misery. The opposite of generous is a miser.

Acts 20:35 (NIV) The Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

The value of my life isn’t determined by how much I achieve or accumulate but by how much of my life I give away.

1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NIV) Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.  In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 

God’s way works.
