The Beat of a Different Drum Part 2: The Heartbeat of God
We’ve learned that the world beats to three main drums:
- The lust of the flesh – selfishness.
- The lust of the eyes – greed.
- The pride of life – godlessness. Less of God in our life
John 13:23 (NKJV) Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
If you were leaning your head on God’s chest, what would you hear? What are the things God’s heart beats to.
Matthew 9:12-13 (AMP) [Jesus] said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but [only] those who are sick. Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I desire compassion [for those in distress], and not sacrifice [gifts],’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the righteous, but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].”
1. God’s heart beats to the pulse of compassion.
Isaiah 61:1-3 (TLB) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the suffering and afflicted. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted, to announce liberty to captives, and to open the eyes of the blind. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of God’s favor to them has come . . . . [to] give beauty for ashes; joy instead of mourning; praise instead of heaviness.
2 Corinthians 5:19-20 (TLB) For God was in Christ, restoring the world to himself, no longer counting men’s sins against them but blotting them out. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others. We are Christ’s ambassadors. God is using us to speak to you: we beg you, as though Christ himself were here pleading with you, receive the love he offers you—be reconciled to God.
God’s heartbeat has to become our heartbeat!
John 17:20-21, 23 (TLB) “I am not praying for these alone but also for the future believers who will come to me because of the testimony of these. My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind, just as you and I are, Father . . . . so that the world will know you sent me and will understand that you love them as much as you love me.
2. God’s heart beats to the pulse of unity.
Romans 16:17-18 (ESV) I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites.
Jude 1:19 (ESV) It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.
Colossians 3:13-14 (NCV) Bear with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. Even more than all this, clothe yourself in love. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity.
The answer to division is forgiveness. Unforgiveness is the tool the devil uses to perfect his work on earth.
3. God’s heart beats to the pulse of eternity.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The closer you get to God, the more you lean into Him, the more you catch the heartbeat of God.
