Trust God Part 1: God’s Word Is Powerful

2 Corinthians 1:8-10 (TLB) I think you ought to know, dear brothers, about the hard time we went through in Asia. We were really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we would never live through it. We felt we were doomed to die and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us, for he can even raise the dead. And he did help us and saved us from a terrible death; yes, and we expect him to do it again and again.

John 6:63 (NIV) The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit [pneuma: wind or breath of God that exerts its influence] and they are life [zoe: God’s quality of life].

Joshua 1:7-8 (NIV) Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Fall in love with God’s Word. God’s Word has the power to change your life. How do you trust God? By trusting His Word.

Hosea 4:6 (Expanded Bible) My people ·will be [or are being] destroyed, because they ·have no [lack] knowledge. You have ·refused to learn [rejected knowledge; or failed to acknowledge me].

Top 3 Reasons People Do Not Read Their Bible:
  1. I don’t have time.
  2. I don’t know where to start.
  3. The Bible is too confusing.

Matthew 7:24 (MSG) These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock.

  • Meditation activates revelation.

God’s Word rarely gets revealed on the first pass. You have to think about God’s Word, ponder it, talk about it in your small group; give time for the Holy Spirit to reveal it.

Proverbs 4:20-22 (VOICE) Pay attention to all the words I am telling you. Lean in closer so you may hear all I say. Keep them before you; meditate on them; set them safely in your heart. For those who discover them, they are life. They bring wholeness and healing.

  • Revelation activates faith.

If you want your faith to come alive, so you can believe God’s promises, revelation has to happen. In other words, logos (God’s written word) must become rhema (God’s revealed word).

Luke 1:34-38 (NIV) “ How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God [revelation took place] . . . . For no word [rhema] from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

  • Faith activates God’s Word.

Faith causes the Bible to come alive. You have to mix your reading with faith; that God will reveal His Word to you.

Hebrews 4:2 (NIV) For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

A Bible which is falling apart usually belongs to someone who’s not!
